Replacement Windows: A Value Addition
One of the most important value additions that can be made to a home or other building is the replacement of the old windows. Modern window designs incorporating double glazing and improved weather-stripping are an investment that pays dividends from the moment they are installed.
The advantages and benefits of replacement windows are legion:
- Energy efficiency – Heat transference in greatly reduced by the use of double glazing and better weather-stripping. The window frame materials reduce the energy loss through conduction.
- Maintenance – It is no longer necessary to repaint or refinish the window frames. Modern framing materials have the color incorporated or electro-statically applied, eliminating the need for bi-annual repainting. Window glazing is either with a wrap-around gasket or using a sealant and snap-in glazing bead. No more using calk or putty to keep the loosening glass in place.
- Depending on the window configuration: Double-hung, single-hung, horizontal slider, awning or hopper, the window sashes are easily cleaned from the inside. On the hung windows, the sashes either remove or tilt-in for ease of cleaning the outside surfaces. Horizontal sliders either have bypassing sashes or they are easily removed for cleaning of the track and exterior surfaces.
- Window screens are easily removed and are much more effective at keeping the insects on the outside of the house.
- Locking mechanisms are much more secure and not easily “jimmied” by illegal entrants. Sliding windows have “anti-lift” devices that prevent removal of the sashes from outside the building. All types of window designs have “limiters” to reduce sash travel, so they may be opened enough to allow ventilation, but not enough to allow egress.
